Our Clydesdale Story

At Silverstream Clydesdales, we are passionate about preserving the history and unique features of this rare breed. Our hands-on experience includes teamster’s refreshment alongside harness demonstration, educational discussion, and the opportunity to get up close to these magnificent horses for photos and a sensory experience. Come and be a part of our journey to celebrate the beauty of Clydesdales.

Silverstream Clydesdales is the realisation of a dream for artist Susie Izard and her daughter, rural contractor & animal technician, Cate Smith.  As a young girl living in Tekapo with her family, Cate was a horse trekking guide and after much saving and pleading for her own, she got her warm blood horse, Pete. Susie wanted to keep her company & got their very first Clydesdale - the beautiful gentle Billy. Two very sensibly named horses that started a journey that, at times, didn’t seem sensible!

After many years of hard work, challenges, learning and developing their knowledge of these gentle giants they are now building their own herd of beautiful Clydesdales. They can now share their respect and love for this beautiful rare breed with visitors to New Zealand.

From small beginnings, where they were only going to ride their two horses in the mountains, they now have four Clydesdales; are active members of the Clydesdale Horse Society of NZ, the Canterbury Clydesdale Club and are on the Mackenzie A&P Show Committee. They both travel and show their horses at South Island horse shows (A&P)

They regularly take their horses on multi-day pleasure rides in the mountains of the South Island and try a range of low level riding disciplines as well as harness work; and aim to expand their breeding interests to contribute to the future of this rare breed of horse. They are hugely supported by the NZ Clydesdale community and continue to keep learning but, most importantly, have a lot of fun.
